From Alice to Mac to a Different Kind of Weekend

1. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Don't Come Around Here No More (Live)

Due to Burton's current release of a new Alice in Wonderland film I remembered this uber classic. This is one of those rare songs that has a really awesome story behind it. It is actually a collabaration between Petty and Stewart from Eurythmics, and the song itself was heavily inspired by a strange late night encounted Stewart had with Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac. After a concert in the mid 80s, Stewart was invited to a party at Stevie Nicks' house. And although the official version is that everybody started to do coke while Stewart went to a bedroom to retire, you got to be a complete asshole to believe that story. In other words, everybody started to do coke, Stewart got really wasted and went up to a random room to sleep. Then happens the strangest thing. He awakes in the dead of night to find Stevie Nicks trying on victorian clothing (it so fucking despotic I like it!) in the room he is sleeping in. And he remembers the whole scenario as very Alice in Wonderland-esque. In the morning, when everybody was leaving, Nicks told an old boyfriend of hers "Don't come around here no more". And a song was born. The music video, which is kind of cool although a bit like TV science fiction from the 80s, is completely Alice inspired. And of course, Petty is the Mad Hatter. Enjoy!

2. Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere (Live)

Just because we brushed on the subject of Fleetwood Mac it would only be natural to pursue it in its entirety. This is Everywhere from '87, first featured in their album Tango in the Night. It was written by Christine McVie who played keyboard and sang in Fleetwood Mac until the late 90s. Fleetwood Mac have many great songs, but I like the pacing of Everywhere, it's the kind of song you can play at party and it has a feel good air around it. This video also gives you the great opportunity to add a big lol to the fail hairstyles the members of Fleetwood sport. Clearly, you can make great music and look like a balding bohemian music instructor at a summer camp.

3. Vampire Weekend - Giving Up the Gun

Firstly, I love this video. It's awesome in so many ways. They video in itself is smug, cool stage, cool headbands and a cool red-headed chick serving away. Secondly, it features really really sucky tennis playing and contains a few seriously kick ass guest performances. Jake Gyllenhaal plays some kind of rogue tennis bad ass McEnroe style, and he does it so great I literary loled the first time I saw this video. And besides him, RZA plays the judge. Which, in itself, isn't very cool. But RZA did make the soundtrack to one of my favourite movies of all time: Ghost Dog. So, due to that fact, I adore him even though I wouldn't play his music. Finally, Joe Jonas (yes, from the absolutely ridiculous Jonas Brothers) also stars in this video. Why? Who knows. I wish it would've been Justin Timberlake instead - 'cause him I liek. Thirdly, this video ends in the strangest of fashions: instead of water, the red headed tennis goddess cools off by pouring milk over her face. Yepp, just like that. And I see now that I got slightly side tracked: why Vampire Weekend and why now? Easy peasy, Vampire Weekend are, and I'm not going out on a limb here, inspired by the previous artists. Also, I accidentally discovered that they have made two great covers of these two songs, Don't Come Around Here No More you can find here and Everywhere here.
