1. Southside Johnny and the Ashbury Jukes & Bon Jovi - Trapped Again (Live)

The story of Southside Johnny and his back-up band the Ashbury Jukes is kind of a bittersweet one. Southside Johnny and Bruce Springsteen both merged in the early 70s as promising artist in the Jersy Shore scene. With just a few years apart, both artists released their seminal and critically acclaimed records - Bruce in 75' with Born to Run and Johnny in 78' with Hearts of Stone. However, while Springsteen boosted right in on Time Magazines front page, Southside Johnny got dropped by his record company due to bad sales. And alas, a long tale of being the second runner up started for Southside Johnny. And I don't know, maybe it was because their sound was to alike and there could only be one, or that Bruce was kind of sexy and and simply fit the folds a lot better. I don't know. But, for all you Springsteen fans there are a couple of really good early records by Southside Johnny that can be found.
It is important to remember that he is not unknown, on the contrary, he is locally a very popular figure - but in comparison to his Jersey-Shore-sound collegue he ain't nothin' much. The gap in success obviously bothered Springsteen, who donated songs to Southside Johnnys records and regularly performed live with him to boost his success. Didn't help much though, but at least Southside Johnny is responsible for Jon Bon Jovi getting in to music - and that has to count for something. Or maybe not. But, this song is great and there a lot more long lost jewels to be found in Southside Johnnys portfolio of neglected music.

2. The Gaslight Anthem & Bruce Springsteen - The '59 Sound (Live)

Yeah, well if Southside Johnny is responsible for the makings of Bon Jovi - Springsteen can shoulder the responsibility when it comes to The Gaslight Anthem. My god do they sound alike. But hell, it is probably the best Jersey Shore rock every seen, so a job well done. Okey, I'm going to start out by saying that I really like this band's second album The 59' Sound. It is just fantastic. Great sound with lyrics that have a kind of streetlike gritty feel to them and I like the way Brian Fallon almost mimics Springsteen singing (but with a bit more punk to it). But all that aside, this live clip is just to cool to be true. The Gaslight Anthem have just achieved moderate success with the album mentioned above, and are touring Europe among other things. When  they are suddenly approched by the Boss himself and asked if they can't play one of their songs with him on the tour. Well, they did. And you can see the childlike totally frigging awesomeness Brian Fallon experiences while sharing the stage with his biggest idol in the whole damn world. In that way, this clip is fun to watch even though the music isn't for you. If it is for you, the record I mentioned won't let you down.

3. Bruce Springsteen - Spirit in the Night (Live)

This is my favourite live clip of Bruce. The year is 1975 and Bruce has just released Born to Run and ventured over to Europe to perform three live gigs, first one in London, then one in Stockholm of all places and finally one in Amsterdam. However, due the extreme demand he added a second on in London to finish the tour. This video is from the first one, which was filmed and released as a live album and concert tape inventively called Hammersmith Odeon London 75'. This performance is just awesome. Not only is the band amazingly tight and Bruce just totally fired up, it is one of those rare filmed concert moments that actually translates into a genuine experince even by just watching it. This is not my favourite song and far from the most accessible one for new listeners - but the whole clip is just funny to watch. Especially around 4.30 into the song when Bruce decides it would be a good idea to crawl of the stage into a crack and fall down, spooking the audience and losing his hat, and then popping up like some kind of jack-in-the-box to finish the song in an amazing crescendo. Well, if you like it, just youtube search on Springsteen hammersmith, and I am quite sure you can find the whole concert. It is great, and when watching it - maybe it isn't so strange Bruce was the more successful one. He just got it. And look at how stylish he is, I mean - wearing that would make you awesome still today. But I don't know about the hat. Hopefully he lost it under that stage. Finally, just as a reminder, the guy is only 26 in this clip. 26! Gosh. I feel like an underachiever.
